The term “Emotional Intelligence” was conceived by Dr Peter Salovey and John Mayer in 1990 as an identifier for the human capacity to understand and engage in meaningful social interactions. Together with Dr. David Caruso, they developed the Mayer-Salovey-Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test (MSCEIT™) which has been integrated into modern Emotional Intelligence Training.
In his book “Emotional Intelligence: Why EQ Can Matter More Than IQ” (1995), Daniel Goleman defined Emotional Intelligence (EI) as the “capacity for recognizing our own feelings and those of others, for motivating ourselves, and for managing emotions well in ourselves and our relationships.” Since then, considerable research has shown that EI is a significant determinant of success in many occupations, and often more significant than traditional Intelligence.
Dr Reuven Bar-On devised another model of Emotional Intelligence and used it to create his Emotional Quotient Inventory (EQ-i) in 1997. This self-assessment pinpoints the traits that allow a person to succeed and those that stand in the way of progress, meaning that the tool is particularly useful in personal and professional development. The EQ-i 2.0 was launched in 2011 and builds upon the original EQ-i. With new items, revised scales and clearer reports, the EQ-i 2.0 is an excellent tool for leadership development and coaching.

- Impulse Control: To effectively and constructively control emotions
ADAPTABILITY (change management)
- Reality-Testing: To objectively validate one’s feelings and thinking with external reality
- Flexibility: To adapt and adjust one’s feelings and thinking to new situations
- Problem-Solving: To effectively solve problems of a personal and interpersonal nature
GENERAL MOOD (self-motivation)
- Optimism: To be positive and look at the brighter side of life
- Happiness: To feel content with oneself, others and life in general
Emotional Intelligence Training can teach anyone to understand and apply the five skills of emotional intelligence
The five skills of emotional intelligence can be learned by anyone, at any time when properly trained in Emotional Intelligence Training. But there is a difference between learning about emotional intelligence and applying that knowledge to your life. Just because you know you should do something doesn’t mean you will—especially when you become overwhelmed by stress, which can hijack your best intentions.
In order to permanently change behavior in ways that stand up under pressure, you need to learn how to take advantage of the powerful emotional parts of the brain that remain active and accessible even in times of stress. This means that you can’t simply read about emotional intelligence in order to master it. You have to experience and practice the skills in your everyday life.
